From Garage to Greatness: A Business Built on Improving a Passion
Orion Hunting Products - Origin Story, Part 1 - A 2020 Beginning.

At Orion Hunting Products, we don’t just build blinds; we engineer solutions for the dedicated hunter. Our founder, Beau Anderson, started Orion Hunting Products as he was improving his own hunting experience. Check out this podcast for more history and learn more about the core values of Orion’s founder: family, hunting, problem solving and continued personal growth.
If you don’t have time to listen to the podcast, we’ve pulled together the key takeaways about how a passion for the Northwoods and a background in engineering collided to create the ultimate hunting experience.
1. The "Problem-Solver" Mindset
Beau didn’t start Orion because he wanted to sell more gear; he started it because he was frustrated with the gear available. As an engineer, he saw three major flaws in the traditional box blind market:
● Weight: They were impossible to move without heavy machinery.
● Durability: They didn’t stand up to the brutal U.P. winters.
● Safety: Climbing into a blind shouldn't be the most dangerous part of your hunt.
The conversations dive into how Orion's modular design was the answer—allowing a single hunter to carry a premium, insulated blind into the deepest parts of the woods, one 40lb panel at a time.
2. Born and Built in the U.P.
One of the most resonant parts of the podcast was the discussion on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Beau talks about the grit required to start a business in a rural area. Being "Forged in the Northwoods" isn't just a marketing slogan; it’s a manufacturing standard.
When you build products in a place where 200+ inches of snow is a "mild winter," you build them differently. Beau explains how this environment dictates the materials we use—like our all-steel, powder-coated towers and aerospace-grade aluminum panels.
3. Safety is Not Optional
A major highlight of the interview was Beau’s focus on the Orion Stand System. He discusses the engineering behind the stair-and-deck system. Most "tower stands" are glorified ladders, but Beau explains why Orion prioritized a full deck and handrails.
"The goal is to get hunters of all ages—from kids to grandpas—into the stand safely. If you don’t feel secure, you won’t stay out as long. And if you aren't out there, you aren't filling your tag."
4. Innovation Through Obsession
The podcast wraps up with a look at the future of Orion. Beau shares his philosophy on "tangible continuous improvement." Whether it’s the patented quick-latch system that requires zero tools or the integrated scent-control sealing, every feature is a direct result of being out in the field and asking, "How can we make this better?"
